LED Lighting: Future Tech

by Mike V on 06/03/13

What uses 80-90 percent less energy, produces 96 percent less heat, does not emit UV light and is 100 percent recyclable? The answer to these questions (and your high energy bills) is Light Emitting Diode (LED) bulbs.

Cool to the touch and unsurpassed in durability, this relatively new technology is paving the way for energy efficient indoor and outdoor applications. LED bulbs DO NOT contain mercury or other toxic materials used in Compact Fluorescent Lights (CFLs), meaning they are safe for the environment and most importantly, you and your loved ones.

Oh and the savings... LED bulbs are rated last up to 20 times longer than standard incandescent lights, not to mention superior efficacy (lumen output per watt). To see how much you can save over the lifetime of an LED lighting solution vs. incandescent bulbs, see the Easy Savings Calculator located on the left side bar of our home page. In most applications, you will see your initial investment paid off with energy savings in two years or less (around the time your incandescent bulb will burn out).

Another pro to "warm spectrum" LEDs is that they do not emit light in the UV or blue spectra, which insects are most attracted to. That means less watts AND less swats.

So will you stay heated this summer with incandescent bulbs or be cool and save some green with LEDs? The choice, and the savings, are yours.

East Rochester Home Energy Workshop February 22

by Mike V on 02/16/12

Free energy saving event for East Rochester residents

EAST ROCHESTER, N.Y., FEBRUARY 22, 2012 – The Town/Village of East Rochester will hold a free Energy Workshop hosted by Mayor Fred Ricci on February 22, 2012, from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. at the Jean Daniel Senior Citizens Center, 120 West Commercial Street, that will provide residents with valuable information to help them reduce energy use and annual energy costs by an average of $700.

The Mayor of East Rochester will be the emcee of the event while representatives from PathStone Corporation and Center for Environmental Initiatives (CEI) will give presentations, answer questions, and provide assistance at the workshop.

The workshop will include information about NYSERDA’s Home Performance with ENERGY STAR® program which offers homeowners a comprehensive, whole-house energy assessment to improve energy efficiency and home comfort while saving money.  Participants will be able to sign up for a free or reduced-cost energy assessment and learn about available cash incentives and low-interest loans to assist with energy retrofit costs.  PathStone will be able to provide assistance in applying for the free or reduced-cost energy assessment, submitting utility summaries, and answering questions regarding the Green Jobs – Green New York Program.

PathStone Corporation has been awarded a contract by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) to be the GJGNY Constituency Based Organization (CBO) of the Finger Lakes Region.

To sign up for a free or reduced-cost home energy audit, residents are encouraged to bring their utility bill account number, copies of recent electric and heating bills, or a summary record of their past 12 months of energy use. Attendees will have the opportunity to obtain utility summary print outs and ask questions regarding the GJGNY Program.  The energy assessment is available through the Green Jobs - Green New York Program, a statewide effort that uses revenue from the sale of carbon emission credits to support energy efficiency measures and jobs in the clean energy sector.

All East Rochester homeowners are encouraged to attend the workshop. Each of the first 30 East Rochester residents to pre-register and attend the event will receive a free Compact Fluorescent Light (CFL) bulb. Just one ENERGY STAR qualified CFL lasts up to 10 times longer than a traditional incandescent and can save $70 over the life of the bulb.

Pre-register for the workshop at
